Freeview is transmitted in two formats :
Digital Satellite
To receive digital satellite you need to have a satellite dish installed. The signal strength from D1 satellite is very good, in most cases a 65cm dish will be all that is needed for a rainfade free reception. Unlike the low signal strength from the previous satellite B1 where an 80cm dish was recommended to avoid periods of rainfade. You should only experience rainfade in very heavy rain with digital satellite. If you experience rainfade in lighter rain conditions, then your dish will most likely need adjustment. Please note: The digital terrestrial service is scheduled for launch in 2008.

Digital Terrestrial
To receive digital terrestrial you need to have a UHF aerial. This is slightly different to the normal VHF aerial that is used to receive TV1, TV2 and TV3. One of the main differences between the two is that the UHF aerial needs a direct line of sight to the transmitter whereas VHF does not. The UHF signal can be compared to a cell phone signal in the sense that it can be good in one spot, but move a few metres and you could loose the signal completely. It is very important to install the correct size aerial for your house as not enough signal and too much signal will both have a detrimental effect on your picture quality.
